Quotes about Television, Part 2
Purple Cellar reader Carol Blair posted a comment to our first TV-related quote. Her comment lists three ways that she has benefited from the absence of TV. I am reposting her short list here:

1) I am not desensitized to evil. Every 3 or 4 months I take my car to the . . . dealership in town for maintenance, and in the waiting room is a TV--tuned to CNN news. I am shocked at the commercials. If no one else is watching it, I turn it off.

2) Contentment. Because I am not bombarded with commercials for more "stuff," I am content with what I have. (A specific application of this contentment: My first car lasted me 19 years.)

3) More hours in my day. At my job, I'm considered somewhat of an oddity for not having a TV, but something Elisabeth Elliot has said applies here and is a great comfort to me: "If your goal is purity of heart, be prepared to be thought quite odd." I'm very content to be thought quite odd.

It is very encouraging to read of others who do not feel a TV is a necessity in the home. My husband and I have been without one for nearly three years now because as you mentioned even the commercials are sickeneing and we do not want our small daughters seeing such content. There are times, especially during the holidays, when I entertain the thought of getting service again and my husband reminds me why we agreed in the first place to not have a television in our home. Your post is such a good reminder.
